🌍 Weekend Trips from the Netherlands: My Travel Guide for Quick Getaways

Ankit Tomar, June 2, 2025May 28, 2025

Hey there!
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re thinking of stepping out to explore—and let me say, congrats! You’ve already taken the first step toward building incredible travel memories.

Whether you’ve just moved to the Netherlands or have been living here a while, the great thing about this country is its location. The Netherlands is beautifully positioned in the heart of Europe, making it super easy to explore nearby countries in just a weekend.

In this blog, I’m sharing three of my favorite weekend getaways from the Netherlands: Paris, Brussels, and Bruges—along with transport tips, where to stay, and what to eat.

🇫🇷 Paris – “Paris is not a city, it’s a world”

Paris lives up to every word of that quote. The city is stunning, vibrant, and full of charm. When I visited Paris, I was overwhelmed—in the best way—by the sheer number of things to do and see. Whether you love art, architecture, nightlife, food, or just the city vibes, Paris has something for everyone.

🚆 How to Get There

  • Best option: TGV high-speed train from Amsterdam – takes just 3 hours and drops you right in the city center.
  • Budget option: Bus – tickets can be as low as €17, but the overnight journey is tiring.
  • Flight: Also an option, but less convenient due to airport transfers and early check-ins.

💡 Book the TGV early to get great prices. It’s the best mix of comfort, speed, and convenience.

🕒 Ideal Itinerary

Leave Friday night and return Sunday evening or Monday morning. 2 full days in Paris is a good start.

🛏 Where to Stay

Anywhere near a metro line is great.
I stayed at Ibis Budget hotels—small but clean and budget-friendly.

🍽️ What to Eat

Next to the Louvre Museum, you’ll find loads of cafés and restaurants. I personally loved Kashmir Paris—the Indian masala tea there was amazing!

🇧🇪 Brussels – Waffles, Chocolates & Culture

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and a perfect blend of old and new. From Mini-Europe to the Royal Palace, it’s a great place for a relaxing yet enriching weekend.

One thing I loved? Even though it’s just a few hours away from the Netherlands, you can already feel a cultural shift the moment you step into Brussels.

🚆 How to Get There

  • Regular intercity trains from Amsterdam Central to Brussels Central run every hour.
  • Try to travel early in the morning for fewer crowds.

🧳 Tips:

  • I used the NS 40% discount product on my OV-chipkaart—saved me a lot!
  • Keep your bags with you. There have been theft incidents on intercity trains. Avoid leaving luggage in overhead racks.

🕒 Ideal Itinerary

Start Saturday morning and return Sunday evening. It’s perfect for a 1.5-day trip.

🛏 Where to Stay

Stay close to the city center for convenience. If staying further out, ensure there’s tram or bus connectivity.

🍽️ What to Eat

Don’t miss the Waffle Factory—a must-visit!
I also enjoyed a nice Indian meal at Royal Place (good for vegetarians too).

🏰 Bruges – A Medieval Fairytale

Bruges feels like stepping into a storybook. With centuries-old architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and a laid-back vibe, it’s one of the most scenic towns I’ve ever walked through. It’s small but packed with charm.

🚆 How to Get There

  • Take a train to Brussels, then transfer to a local train to Bruges
  • The full journey from Amsterdam takes around 4 hours

Once there, you can explore almost everything on foot. It’s a very walkable city, and Google Maps will help with local buses if needed.

🕒 Ideal Itinerary

Start early Saturday morning and return Sunday evening. One night is enough to soak in the Bruges experience.

🛏 Where to Stay

Look for accommodation near the city center.
I stayed in a small hotel I found via Booking.com. It wasn’t luxurious but perfect for the weekend.

🍽️ What to Eat

Try local Belgian food near the central square.
I wasn’t blown away by the waffles here, but McDonald’s and Burger King are available if you’re in the mood for familiar food.

✨ Final Thoughts

If you’re living in the Netherlands, don’t wait too long to start exploring.
You’re in the perfect spot for spontaneous trips across Europe.

Weekend getaways are not just about seeing new places—they’ll help you:

  • Become a better planner and organizer
  • Gain a broader perspective on cultures and life
  • Create beautiful memories you’ll cherish for years

“Start traveling—and start soon. The more you explore, the more you grow.”
